An agricultural contractor established since 1989, farming near Sudbury, Suffolk
Belchamp Farm Services was launched in 1989 as a contractor and farm services company. Since its inception the business has expanded based on a high level of technical knowledge
From relatively modest base of 750 acres in 21 years that acreage has grown to just under 5000 acres today. The ten farms that BFS manage have enjoyed a mixture of strong farm management and tightly controlled costs.
The remit for BFS was and still is to apply large economies of scale to smaller and medium size acreages. The cost of machinery and skilled labour has risen hugely over the last few years. Only very large or diversified holdings have managed to thrive in such a difficult environment.
By using a good proportion of centralised crop storage, high quality modern machinery and strong input purchasing power our clients have managed to cut the overheads on their farms without sacrificing productivity. An emphasis on detailed management and the willingness to adopt and modify emerging farming techniques has brought good results. The company was among the first to bring reduced tillage to the UK in the 1990's and is now at the forefront of further innovations having started direct drilling, cover crops and minimum soil disturbance policies a few years ago. This area of the business continues to bring benefits and will be rolled out over our conventional areas as we gain more experience.
