Combining

Case 2188 20ft Axial Flow Combine:

An axial flow combine operates in a very different way compared to a conventional combine. Internally the machine has one large longitudinal drum running front to rear that rotates at up to 1000 rpm. The harvested crop enters one end of the drum, is spun at high speed, and the grain is quickly separated from the stem and chaff. bfs_combine.jpg (14293 bytes)
The clean grain is transferred to a tank on the machine which is unloaded into a trailer when full.   At the peak of the harvest season, and weather permitting, this machine will run seven days a week, fourteen hours or more a day (often by lights at night) during July and August. The 310 hp diesel engine is only just sufficient to power this vehicle. The picture above shows the vehicle with the header/cutter bar removed for road transport. The picture to the left shows the combine being cleaned at the end of the harvest season.
